The LASC (Laboratoire d'Anthropologie Sociale et Culturelle) was founded in 2008, in the wake of the creation of the Master's degree in Anthropology at the Faculté des Sciences Sociales of the Université de Liège.

Its main ambition is to offer teachers and researchers a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas, an essential condition for the quality of their work and teaching. In addition to fostering synergies between IRSS anthropology professors and researchers, the LASC aims to provide a place for teaching through research for doctoral students and advanced students.

The Laboratory defends a theoretical openness to the approaches represented within the discipline, and is careful not to close itself off in terms of themes, issues or fields. It remains attentive to new perspectives in anthropology, and encourages young researchers to work on what interests them, as this personal motivation is a guarantee of the quality of their work. Initially, however, the Laboratory intends to capitalize on the expertise of its members by focusing on their preferred areas of research:

These three main areas are accompanied by four cross-cutting themes:

  • Materiality, techniques and transmission
  • Bodies and sensitive experiences
  • Migration, gender and identity
  • Ethnographic and artistic explorations

The LASC's identity is also marked by a strong empirical orientation: while cultivating theoretical ambitions, the Laboratory will give priority to ethnographic research, based on solid field experience. The Laboratory is open to all researchers in the humanities and social sciences at the University of Liège interested in anthropology and committed to this project.
